Inclined to Sing: Singing and Playing Around the World

Join the children’s chorus of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra for a spring concert featuring music from many cultures.

Director Valerie E. Galczynski, pianist Jeffrey Hornick, and the young singers have worked hard all year to prepare a beautiful program of music written especially to showcase children’s voices.

Since 2001, Inclined to Sing has been making music with young singers. The ITS mission is to provide a child-centered vocal musical experience for children of the area. Learning techniques of good singing, preparing quality literature and having fun are the goals of each rehearsal. Children deserve a positive musical experience that will last throughout their lifetime and Inclined to Sing is committed to that outcome. Our program is graciously supported by The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, The Johnstown Symphony Chorus and most especially the parents of these talented singers. For more information and to join us next semester, please visit johnstownsymphony.org to see the ITS page. Rehearsals will resume in September.

For some, it is their first experience playing in an ensemble with all families of instruments. While many live in Johnstown, it is common to have students driving from Indiana, Ligonier, Somerset, Hollidaysburg, Northern Maryland, and even Fulton County to attend the weekly Sunday afternoon rehearsals.

Often, those in the JSYO also participate in PMEA district, region, and state festivals. They play a variety of music, from traditional classical to music from the movies, Broadway, and jazz. The JSYO is often invited to perform side-by-side with professional musicians onstage and enjoys a close mentoring relationship with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra.

Community Strings Fall Concert

  • St. David's Lutheran Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This concert is free and general admission.

Community Strings was born in the spring of 2009 as part of the engagement initiatives of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra (JSO), when a group of adult string players gathered with the purpose of forming an ensemble to make music together, in the spirit of our region’s strong tradition of municipal bands and choruses. The avocational musicians, from as far away as Berlin and Loretto, across Somerset and Cambria counties, have been meeting simply to enjoy and enrich their personal accomplishments alongside players of similar yet varied skill levels.

The goal has been to rehearse and perform, to learn as a group from Director Elizabeth Pile and from each other, and to enrich each player's life with the communal enjoyment of music. Additional benefits include improvement of individual skill levels, learning to understand the dynamics of playing as an ensemble (rather than on their own), and flexibility of rehearsing and performing in a casual, low-pressure environment.
